Originally, all the coal needed to operate the fog signal machinery at Manana Island had to be unloaded by hand from a ship and then had carried up to the fog signal station. However, once this trolley system was built and went into operation, the process was less labor intensive, but nevertheless still hard back-breaking work. In 1888 the fog signal at Manana Island had logged a record of 1,577 hours of operation that consumed 31,469 pounds of coal. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
