Photo Caption:

The stairs leading up to the lantern at Maine’s Egg Rock Lighthouse are accessed from the middle of the keeper’s quarters. It was on these stairs that, on March 21, 1876, Ambrose Wasgatt and his family sought refuge as ocean swells and waves swept up onto the island and into the keeper’s house.
