This photo was taken about the time Gibbs was a keeper at Tillamook Rock Lighthouse in 1945. He first likened his assignment there to being “exiled forever” on a “pint-sized Alcatraz that took on the aspects of an insane asylum,” but grew to be fond of it by the time he left a year later.
