Bedecked in flags, this photo of the first tender Manzanita was taken sometime between 1894 and 1905 when Astoria held yearly regattas. The Manzanita often served as the flagship and judge’s boat for the yearly festivals. Unfortunately, on October 6, 1905, the Manzanita sank in a collision with the dredge Columbia and tug John McCracken in the Columbia River near Puget Island. It was later salvaged by the Kern Company of Portland, OR, and became the tug Daniel Kern. It was eventually scrapped and burned in 1939. The second Manzanita was built in 1908 to take its place.
