A native of Germany, Peter C. Nelson started his lighthouse career as a 3rd assistant keeper at the Point Sur Lighthouse in 1892. During that time, he worked his way up to 2nd assistant keeper and then 1st assistant keeper. He left Point Sur Lighthouse in 1902 to become the keeper at California’s Lime Point Lighthouse where he served for an amazing 28 years. He finished his career at Point Pinos Lighthouse in 1937, having served for an amazing 45 years in the U.S. Lighthouse Service. At the time of his retirement, he was one of the four longest serving lighthouse keepers in the United States. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
