Crew Arrival
Although it was possible for a lighthouse keeper to reach the Los Angeles Harbor Lighthouse by foot over the three-mile long breakwater, all keepers and crew arrived at the station by boat, as shown in this old undated photo. The original name of the lighthouse was supposed to be the San Pedro Breakwater Lighthouse, but after much discussion, it was changed to the Los Angeles Harbor Lighthouse. Because of this, the lighthouse has often been referred to as the San Pedro Harbor Lighthouse. Also, because Los Angeles is known as the “City of Angels,” the lighthouse is also known as the Angel’s Gate Lighthouse. Eight months after the lighthouse went into operation, a personnel issue arose. Head keeper John Olsen noted the problem in the logbook when he wrote, “Second assistant keeper Philip Hughes suspended from duty for assaulting the keeper. All keepers are instructed that in the future no distilled or malt liquors are to be brought to this station.” (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
