Fannie Salter is shown here in 1939 ringing the fog bell at Maryland’s Turkey Point Lighthouse. One time, in the fog when the automatic bell striker failed to work, she was forced to ring the bell herself every 15 seconds for one hour, which she later described as an exhausting experience.
