Photo Caption:

The Craney Island Lighthouse at the entrance to the Elizabeth River was built in 1884 to replace an earlier structure. Notice the overhanging outhouse on the left side of the photo. John Filmore Hudgins served here as the lighthouse keeper from 1907 to 1908. The lighthouse was discontinued in 1934 and plans called for it to be moved to shore to be used as a headquarters for the Sea Scouts. But, after the necessary funds could not be raised to save and move the lighthouse, in 1936 it was demolished. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
