Frederick G. Ketola, who was pulled from rocks in 1960 at Wisconsin Point Lighthouse, is shown here in 1959 after he completed his basic training. Over the years, he was known as Fred, and as Freddie. He also sometimes jokingly would refer to himself as “Phred” and even sign papers that way. He served for 34 years in the U.S. Coast Guard, followed by a second career with the Duluth Fire Department in Duluth, Minnesota. Born on July 18, 1942, he passed away at the age of 68 on May 14, 2011. (Photo Courtesy Cindy Rosas.)
