This image truly shows what an adventure it was for the lighthouse keeper’s family to attend church. If you look closely, you will see the first ladder going up from Motion Island to the top of Wedge Rock. Not visible is the horizontal ladder which extended from the upper edge of Wedge Rock to the East Trinity Headland. However, you can see the series of ladders going up the headland. They go as far as where they eventually meet the trail where it would be a long hike climbing up to the top. From there the family would walk to Deer Harbour to attend church and visit with people in the community and get their mail. In the 1950s the community of Deer Harbour was resettled and is no longer a community. However, those who occasionally visit there continue to remark at its beauty. Would you make this type of walk to attend church every Sunday? (Photograph courtesy Elizabeth (Cooper) Bustard.)
