In the late 1800s, Gay Head Lighthouse was a popular gathering place for people to visit and climb the tower. At the time this photo was taken, oxen were quite popular on the island. Samuel Flanders, who served here as the lighthouse keeper from 1845 to 1849 and again from 1853 to 1861, is considered by most to be Martha’s Vineyard’s first celebrity. He had a knack for keeping his name in the news.
