Front view of Michigan’s endangered Poverty Island Lighthouse. Years after the lantern room was removed from Poverty Island Lighthouse and dumped on the site, the crew of Coast Guard Cutter Acacia discovered the remains of the lantern room. The captain of the Acacia realizing the historical importance of the find instructed his crew to load it on board the vessel and they delivered the sections to Escanaba, Michigan. Then the City of Escanaba, using a front-end loader, picked up the sections and delivered them to the Delta County Historical Society. There volunteers restored the lantern room where it remained on the grounds for public display. When the Delta County Historical Society took over the topless Sand Point Lighthouse they took the restored lantern room from the Poverty Island Lighthouse and installed it in the 1980s atop the Sand Point Lighthouse.
