It is believed that August F. Wichmann (1868-1958) served at Cape Romain Lighthouse for over 25 years, first as an assistant keeper and eventually as head keeper from 1913 to 1934. Wichmann immigrated to the United States from Prussia when he was 20 years old and settled in the Charleston area of South Carolina. He served with the U.S. Army in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. He then joined the U.S. Light House Establishment under the United States Light House Board, which later became the U.S. Bureau of Lighthouses but was more commonly known as the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Wichmann’s 1958 obituary stated that he joined the Coast Guard, which was incorrect, because it wasn’t until 1939 when the Lighthouse Service was taken over by the Coast Guard.
