This 1905 post card shows Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse in the distance as seen from the Ottawa House Hotel on Cushing Island in Casco Bay. Also seen in this post card is Fort Levett on Cushing Island, which was one of a number of fortifications that were built in the Casco Bay area for the defense of Portland Harbor. You will also see one of the large cannons in the fort. The military commander of the fort reportedly said that if the cannons were ever fired, the blast would probably knock out every window of the giant hotel that was capable of housing 300 guests. The owners of the Ottawa House tried to get the federal government to buy the hotel for military housing, but the government declined. The hotel burned in 1917. (Lighthouse Digest archives)
