Photo Caption:
Three of the four Coast Guard keepers at Halfway Rock in December, 1953 (l-r) Seaman Bradford S. Nelson, Seaman Ivan Lavigne, and Boatswain Forest Cheney stand in the doorway of the boat house with the station sign. The sign was usually kept inside and broken out only when company would arrive. If mounted outside, it would often blow away; or if it was attached, some weekend boater would pile up on the rocks trying to get close enough to the island to read the sign.
