In 1939 when the United States Lighthouse Service was dissolved and its duties were taken over by the United States Coast Guard, lighthouse keepers were given the option of joining the Coast Guard and serving under military rules, or staying on as civilian keeper-employees. Edwin G. Ward decided to join the Coast Guard, and he is shown here wearing his Coast Guard keeper uniform. Although the Sodus Point Lighthouse was used for Coast Guard housing for a couple of years after Edwin G. Ward’s retirement, for all practical purposes Edwin G. Ward was the last lighthouse keeper to serve in Sodus Point New York. (Photo courtesy Sodus Bay Lighthouse Museum.)
