Although the 1906 Tasman Island Lighthouse is 95 feet tall, it remains as one of the world’s highest lighthouses. The materials to build the lighthouse had to be hauled up a cliff that is 820 feet high. The lighthouse was automated in 1976. It is reported that the unoccupied former keeper’s homes here are now in a rapid state of deterioration. The original dome of the lighthouse was removed for eventual display at the Tasmanian Maritime Museum. The original Chance Brothers lens that was used here is now on display at the National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour in Sydney, Australia.
