Photo Caption:

The lighthouses of South Fox Island. The first lighthouse to be built on the island was lit on November 1, 1867. It was a “Great Lakes Gothic” schoolhouse look-alike with attached tower. In the 1930’s an erector-set-style 132-foot tall tower replaced the original lighthouse. The station was automated and abandoned in 1958. Both structures still stand today, although both have been the victims of blatant neglect for thirty years and have been shrouded in controversy over who should save the lighthouses. Hopefully, the day will come when they will be saved and restored to honor the memory of George K. Brown who gave his life in service to them.
