Photo Caption:

An old illustration of Tybee Island Lighthouse in Georgia on fire in 1861. Confederate troops in the War Between the States set fire to the wooden stairs inside the lighthouse hoping to render the lighthouse useless to the Union forces. However, Union engineers repaired the stairs and used the lighthouse as an observation post for the Union’s attack on Confederate forces at nearby Fort Pulaski.
