This artwork appeared in the September 26, 1918 edition of LIFE magazine and was titled “The Light of Civilization.” It was referring to the fact that it was believed by most that the United States had played the biggest role in saving civilization during the Great War that was then drawing to a close. Most people at that time and for a while afterward thought that it was the war that would end all wars. How wrong they were. As time marched on, the Great War soon became known as the First World War. The question now remains, can we avoid a Third World War?

This story appeared in the November 2010 edition of Lighthouse Digest Magazine. The print edition contains more stories than our internet edition, and each story generally contains more photographs - often many more - in the print edition.
