This rare photograph of a workboat assigned to the Lighthouse Tender Lotus recently came into the possession of Lighthouse Digest. The photograph was taken in 1940 at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Interestingly, it shows a large brass lighthouse on each side of the bow of the vessel. These brass lighthouse insignias generally appeared on the bows of lighthouse tenders only. However, they generally disappeared off of the vessels shortly after the U.S. Coast Guard took over the U.S. Lighthouse Service in July of 1939. This is the first time that we have seen a photo of a vessel other than a lighthouse tender, or a lightship, that had these brass insignias on them. The Lighthouse Tender Lotus was decommissioned and sold in 1946. It is unknown what happened to this workboat. The bows of the two vessels behind the workboat are the lightships LV-81 (WAL-507), which was inactive at the time, and the LV-53 (WAL-501), the Stonehorse Lightship.
