In 1947 the badly deteriorated and storm damaged light tower at Avery Rock in Machias Bay, Maine was demolished by the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard then encapsulated and reinforced the base of the lighthouse, which was previously the keeper’s residence where famous lighthouse lady Connie Small once lived, and placed this steel erector set style framed structure on top of it. Shown here on a Coast Guard inspection trip to the site in the mid-1950s are Chief George Morrison, Sr. at the helm of the vessel and Chief “Wimpy” Greenlaw standing on the bow.
