In 1918 Congress allocated funds for the Chelsea Lighthouse Depot in Massachusetts and it soon became a large active station. In 1939 when the Lighthouse Service was dissolved and taken over by the Coast Guard, the Coast Guard, as is evident by this 1939 photo, wasted no time in erecting a very large sign that said U.S. Coast Guard atop the administration building. The former Chelsea Lighthouse Depot no longer exists.
