Shown here in this original 1931 photograph is the Rum-Running vessel Josephine K going past Old Orchard Shoal Lighthouse in Lower New York Bay. The vessel was spotted by the Coast Guard Cutter Marion (WSC-145) and ordered to stop which it refused to do. The Coast Guard crew then fired on the Josephine K and when its captain was killed by a shell from cutter, the crew stopped and surrendered. The Coast Guard identified three of the crewmen captured as known bootleggers from Newark, New Jersey.
The 125-foot Coast Guard Cutter Marion (WSC-145) was decommissioned in 1962 and the Old Orchard Shoal Lighthouse was destroyed on October 29, 2012 by Super Storm Sandy. What happened to the Josephine K is unknown, but it was probably sold or auctioned off by the government.
