This is the Metropolis Lighthouse in Metropolis, Illinois that was built as a “Beacon of Hope” in the battle against ovarian cancer. Notice the United States flag hanging from the lighthouse, similar to the flag that is often displayed from Maine’s Little River Lighthouse, which is used to memorialize when Little River Lighthouse, after being dark for 26 years, was relighted as a “Beacon of Freedom to the World” after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

When the Metropolis Lighthouse “Beacon of Hope” was dedicated their supporters wanted Little River Lighthouse to be a “sister light” to the Metropolis Lighthouse. Unfortunately, because of the apparent internal conflicts between the Friends of Little River Lighthouse and its parent organization, the American Lighthouse Foundation, the plans never materialized. Regardless, both structures are worthy beacons for their important origins. To learn more about the Hope Light Foundation, go to www.HopeLightProject.com.
