Does anyone know about the Baldwin Wood Lighthouse in Biloxi, Mississippi, which is shown here on an old post card? The back of the postcard says, “it was built about 1875 and never operated as a real lighthouse, so today one can only guess why it was built.” We don’t know either.
One guess might be that it was named in honor of A. Baldwin Wood who was an inventor who spearheaded the reclamation from swamp and develop the land. Some of his pumps have been in almost continuous use in New Orleans for over 80 years without need of repairs and new ones continue to be built from his designs.
Anyway, if any of our readers can supply historical information on this structure please e-mail our editor at Timh@lhdigest.com or write to Editor, Lighthouse Digest, P.O. Box 1690, Wells, ME 04090.
