American Airlines recently sent out an e-mail to members of its A Advantage program that prominently featured the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse in Illinois with a headline that says “Set sail for summer fun in Boston.” The ad then goes on to tell of all the wonderful things to see and do in Boston.

But, if the unsuspecting tourist looks for this lighthouse in Boston, they won’t find it. The advertising executive or agency for American Airlines should be admonished for this blatant error. It’s amazing that they could not find a good photo of Boston Harbor Lighthouse, America’s first light station, to use with the advertisement that promoted Boston as the Cradle of Liberty. Instead they decided to move this famous Chicago lighthouse to Boston.

Advertisements of this type show a lack of respect for consumers and the maritime and lighthouse history of our nation.

Our thanks go out to Nancy Finlayson of Michigan for bringing this to our attention to share with our readers.
