Ohio’s Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society is now raising money to build a replica of the 1876 Marblehead Life Saving Station that was sadly demolished in the early 1920s.
The replica will be built on the grounds of the Marblehead Lighthouse in Marblehead, Ohio and ground breaking is scheduled for this spring. The Life Saving Service was considered the sister organization of the U.S. Lighthouse Service. In 1915 the U.S. Life Saving Service and the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service were merged to create the U.S. Coast Guard.
The image shown here of the old Marblehead Life Saving Station is from a vintage post card produced by the Alexander Manufacturing Co. of Sandusky, Ohio. It appears that some type of celebration was taking place at the time, perhaps the inauguration of a new life-saving boat.
