In our files here at Lighthouse Digest we have a photograph of a notice "To Visitors" that was at one time posted at lighthouses. It was a general-type notice that stated visitors to the lighthouse would be courteously and politely received and admitted into the tower and lantern room. However you were not allowed to touch the equipment nor damage the interior in any way. It also stated that visitors would not be allowed in the lantern room between sunset and sunrise. The notice was signed, "By Order of the Lighthouse Board, Francis J. Higginson, Rear Admiral, U.S.N., Chairman."
All this got my mind to thinking, just who was Francis J. Higginson? After doing some research, I was easily able to locate some information, but not nearly what I had hoped to find. I'm sure if I had more time I could find a lot more.
