Last October 13th, the Coastal Georgia Historical Society held a service at the Christ Church, Frederica, on St. Simons Island, to honor four men with U.S. Lighthouse Service Keeper Memorial Markers that were placed at their gravesites in the cemetery behind the church.
Three of the men honored served in the U.S. Lighthouse Service: James Gould, who was the keeper from 1810 to 1836; Isaac L. Peckham, who served there from 1883 to 1892; and Carl Olaf Svendsen, who served there from 1907 to 1935.
The fourth man honored was David O’Hagan, who served in the U.S. Coast Guard as the Officer-In-Charge (keeper) of the St. Simons Island Lighthouse from 1945 to 1953. (The U.S. Lighthouse Service was the predecessor of the U.S. Coast Guard.)
