This photograph (circa 1930s) shows the method of hauling up a keeper from the relief boat by means of a rope and winch. From the top of the massive cylindrical base the staircase leads to the lowest room of the tower. From the 1936 book, "The Modern Book of Lighthouses," by W. H. McCormick.
