The 1897 Ontonagon West Pierhead Lighthouse was originally offered for free to qualified nonprofits. In 2012, the Ontonagon County Historical Society submitted an application for ownership of the lighthouse, which was accepted by the federal government. However, for reasons unknown to us, the transfer of ownership never happened, so the lighthouse is now being auction off to the highest bidder. (Lighthouse Digest archives photo.)
