Photo Caption:

This photo was taken onboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Firebush as it approached the Esopus Meadows Lighthouse in January of 1961 to offer assistance to the Coast Guard keepers after the electric power to the station was cut by the shifting ice. After its service in New York, the Firebush was sent to Alaska where it served until it was decommissioned. The Firebush WAGL/WLB 393 was commissioned in July, 1944 and was decommissioned in May, 1933. The vessel was sold to the Republic of Nigeria for use by its navy and was renamed Nwamba.
