Captain Orlo J. Mason served with distinction as a lighthouse keeper for 21 years, nearly eight of them at South Bass Island Lighthouse from September 1, 1900 to April 18, 1908. This photo of him was taken when he was the keeper at Mamajuda Lighthouse. It is unknown if he kept his long beard while stationed at South Bass Island Lighthouse. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
