The setting for Manning the Light by Terry Web is somewhere we’d all dream of living at; an island lighthouse off the New England coast. Except for this book, you’d have to step back in time to 1903, which, if you think about it, would be really neat.
It was the year that the first World Series baseball games were played between the Boston Pilgrims (I really like that name) and the Pittsburg Pirates. Keeping the light lit and the foghorn equipment running provides challenges for Louis and his mother. Young adults will be able to relate to the foibles faced by Louie and his friend Charlie and adults, especially lighthouse lovers, will enjoy reading this historical fiction novel. The author Terry Web is no stranger to the Maine coast, having spent her youth behind the wheel of a Friendship Sloop along Maine’s foggy rockbound coast. A former elementary school teacher, Terry is now a global missionary and Marriage and Family Addiction counselor. She combines her educational and counseling expertise to introduce children to those from other cultures or other centuries. Both a published author and lecturer, Terry has seen her works translated into Russian and Romanian. Her other non-fiction works include Tree of Renewed Life and her books for youth include Imagine Pittsburg When and How to be a Garbologist.
