In the annals of history, there are many ...

In 1902, John F. Enquist, an immigrant from Finland, became the assistant keeper of Washington State’s Destruction Island Lighthouse; in 1906, he was appointed the head keeper. In 1911, after returning from leave in Seattle on board the lighthouse tender Heather, he was being transported in a small boat from the tender to the lighthouse when he was killed in a freak accident when the derrick on the island collapsed and crushed his skull. At the time of his death on August 7, 1911, he was 47 years and 8 months old.
