This grainy photo, from the archives of Lighthouse Digest, was taken by a brave pilot during the 13-day Cuban Missile Crisis of October, 1962 which brought the United States and Russia to the brink of nuclear war.

The photo shows uncompleted Russian runways being built on the northwestern tip of Cuba near a number of new Russian military buildings shown to the right. The lighthouse, near the town of Maisi, Cuba, is shown to the far lower left.

War was averted at the last minute, when a deal was made in which the United States agreed not to invade Cuba and remove U.S. missiles from Turkey in exchange for Russia not installing ballistic missiles in Cuba and dismantling the missile sites that had been completed or were in the process of being completed.

Photos like this are an important part of our history that must to be saved for future generations.
