Tim Harrison, Editor of Lighthouse Digest is shown here with a rare hand printed framed document which was recently discovered. It will be displayed in Lighthouse Depot’s Lighthouse Museum in Wells, Maine.

The document is from the Waterway League of New York and Long Island. It reads:

Whereas this League learns that Captain Chauncey Thomas, U.S. Navy, in command of the 3rd United States Light House Inspection District at Tompkensville, Staten Island, New York has been promoted to another station by the United States Government; and

Whereas, his new duties will call him to other places of usefulness in the service of his country;

Now therefore the League, appreciating his sterling qualities as a man, as an officer, and as an executive of marked ability, regrets the call of duty that deprives the League of his able and patriotic aid. The League takes this occasion to officially record itself in certifying to his courteous and careful consideration of all matters brought before him in our efforts to obtain the necessary aides to navigation in the interest of Life and Commerce and the general benefit to all using the waters for pleasure or profit.

It is the prayer of the League that Good Health-Prosperity and Happiness will abide with him in his every walk in Life.

It is signed by Edward R. Gilman, President of the Waterway League and dated January 11, 1910.

This story appeared in the October 2000 edition of Lighthouse Digest Magazine. The print edition contains more stories than our internet edition, and each story generally contains more photographs - often many more - in the print edition.
