Notes:
Though only a faux lighthouse, the area around Doca de Bom Sucesso Light was incredibly photogenic. On one side of the light is the impressive Monument to the Discoveries. The monument celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery during the 15th and 16th centuries. A short walk along the sea from the other side of the lighthouse is the 16th century Belém Tower. Torre de Belém was commissioned by King John II to be part of a defense system at the mouth of the Tagus River and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon (it once hosted a skeletal lighthouse). Across the river from the lighthouse is the stunning Cristo-Rei, a Christ the King statue that towers nearly 800 feet above the sea. Even the "25 de April Bridge" (Golden Gate Bridge of Lisbon"), suspended above the bay and stretching out for nearly a mile and a half is quite awe-inspiring.
